“Toxic Relationships”
— What does the Bible say vs. what culture says.
We asked you what comes to mind when you hear the word toxic relationships. Here are some of your answers ????
Self-centeredness
Disregard for your partner
Intolerable behaviour
Thank you for sharing ????
But here’s the thing—
In our culture, toxic has become a loaded word.
It can mean anything from abuse… to simply being told something we don’t like.
⚠ Culture often labels as toxic:
People who correct us
Friends who confront sin
Leaders who give constructive criticism
But is correction always toxic? Or is it sometimes… love?
???? Scripture tells a different story.
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but profuse are the kisses of an enemy.”
— Proverbs 27:6
Not everyone who confronts you is your enemy. Sometimes, their honesty is God’s mercy.
So, what actually makes a relationship truly toxic? According to Scripture:
Abuse of power (Ezekiel 34)
Malice, slander, envy (Colossians 3:8)
Unrepentant sin that corrodes community (1 Cor. 5)
That’s very different from someone simply disagreeing with you.
???? The world says:
“Toxic = anyone who challenges your comfort.”
✝ The Word says:
“Toxic = sin that destroys love, trust, and truth.”
Wisdom looks like:
Knowing when to receive correction humbly Knowing when to walk away from real harm
Letting Scripture, not culture, define our words
If we want clarity in a confusing culture, we must stay rooted in God’s Word.
